Premium subsidies are usually provided on a sliding scale based on an individual’s or family’s income. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides premium subsidies through refundable pre-tax credits to individuals with incomes between 133 percent and 400 percent of the federal poverty level who purchase policies through the health insurance exchanges beginning in 2014.
